DNA History

The Wedel Flock started in 1958. After establishing a rather impressive flock Dad began to import stud rams (17 in all) from New Zealand to improve size and quality. This New Zealand influence was an incredible success not only for us but for many of our customers. We have always selected for length, muscle, and good Southdown breed type. When the Spider problem in the Southdown breed began in the 1990’s, we learned to select for some more traits. Decision was made to test all stud rams. We were fortunate to always have NN results. We have continued to only use NN rams since. The flock is 100% Spider Free.

When the Scrapie problem crept into the Southdowns several years ago, I decided to be proactive in testing our rams. Shortly after that, I decided to test the entire ewe flock to ensure high quality for my customers. Currently I am striving to produce RR and QR lambs only. And finally Wedel Southdowns also tests for Ectodermal Dysplasia (ED) otherwise known as Hairy Lamb. I have also tested nearly every ewe in the flock along with the stud rams. The results have been very encouraging. EDF means Hairy Lamb Free. My results for all of these DNA tests are found below. If you have any questions about my testing methods for the DNA of the flock please ask. I thank all of my customers who have selected sheep from Wedel Southdowns for their length, muscle, and breed type. High quality DNA traits will also be added to the number of reasons to select Wedel for your next Southdown purchase!

Wedel Flock DNA Results:
